Minute Maid Park
Located at 501 Crawford Street in Houston, Texas 77002, Minute Maid Park has been the city’s favorite ballpark since its opening in 2000. It is the home stadium of the Houston Astros. One of its most unique features is that it is a natural, outdoor grass field, something Houston’s Major League Baseball team had not seen since 1964. However, Minute Maid Park boasts some modern amenities and conveniences, including a 242-foot high roof that retracts in inclement weather. To learn more about the newly developed field, keep reading.
Minute Maid Park is enmeshed in Houston. What ties it to the city is Union Station—a relic of the city’s railroad past. The railroads allowed Houston to facilitate trade, creating wealth and spreading culture into the Texan city. Banks, ports, and other industries soon gathered around the area. Today, the marble Union Station lobby is the Official Astros Team Store plus a café, and is open to tours. The added on upper levels are where office spaces and luxury suites line the stadium. In honor of the establishment’s railway roots, a to-scale 19th century locomotive circles an 800-foot track on the premise, reminding fans of where it all started.
Although Minute Maid Park has a neat industrial past, its not a outdated venue. It has won a number of awards, including the 2000 Good Brick Award, the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Project, and the National Honor Award for Engineering Excellence. It also promises 31 concessions, not including the dozen or so that are exclusive to club-level spaces. The food options offered range from seasonal menus, to cheese steaks, to tacos, to barbeque, to burgers, to nachos, to pretzels, to peanuts, to hot dogs.
When it comes to events, baseball is the star of every season. Yet Minute Maid Park makes a point to regularly team up with community partners. For example, there are multi-day events featuring Shriners Hospitals for Children. A number of musical acts have made their way to the Park, too, including rockers Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. And, for people who are interested in more extreme sports, WWE events such as the Royal Rumble are featured in the Park, too.
Everyone in the Houston area should see Minute Maid Park and its tie ins to Union Station at some point. From the 19th-century replica of a moving train to the tours, there is a historical charm that underpins the city’s development. What better way to make a trip of it than to catch a game or take in a concert. For more information about event offerings, please view below.
