Beauty and the Beast – Ballet

The Fairytale and Versions
Villeneuve’s original version is a little different from Beaumont’s version. French novelist Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont rewrote the lengthy original in an abridged format and published it in 1756. Many modern-day retellings use Beaumont’s version of Beauty and the Beast.
Each continent has a slightly different version of the fairytale. Europe has around ten official versions (from different countries), while there are four major variations in the American continent and two in Asia.
The story works as a fairytale for kids and a fantasy romance for adults. It is a part of the various stories surrounding the concept of animal brides and grooms.

Ballet Idaho company presents the fairytale in a single-act ballet show by combining it with Peter and the Wolf in act two. Northern Ballet company’s version is almost three hours long, with music by Saint-Saëns, Bizet, and Debussy played live in the background.
Atlanta Ballet company has its own version of Beauty and the Beast ballet. This is a condensed version specially created for the family audience and kids less than twelve years old. In fact, the ballet has a voice-over narration for little ones to follow the story and compare the ballet steps with the storyline.
The San Francisco Ballet company’s artistic director Lew Christensen created a full-length ballet for Beauty and the Beast in 1958 when the company celebrated its 25th anniversary.
The two-act show was a roaring success and was performed every year from 1958 to 1967. It was the only other ballet show by the company to belong this popular. The Nutcracker was the other.
