Sister Act

To some extent, the 1992 movie Sister Act inspired the musical of the same name. The music for this musical was composed by Alan Menken, the lyrics by Glenn Slater, the book by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner, and the extra material furnished by Douglas Carter Beane.

The original West End production, starring Patina Miller, premiered on June 2, 2009, at the London Palladium after having its regional premiere in Pasadena, California, in 2006. Whoopi Goldberg and Stage Entertainment produced the event. After that, the play's productions were staged worldwide, including on Broadway.

The Story

Deloris Van Cartier wants to be a singer. She is trying out to sing at the nightclub run by her gangster boyfriend in Philadelphia. Curtis disappoints Deloris by not introducing her to a famous producer, as she had hoped he would. Deloris decides to break up with him because she feels hurt and rejected. When she goes to find him, she sees him kill one of his friends by accident. Deloris runs to the police, and they hide her in a convent until Curtis's trial.

At first, Deloris thinks it will be the worst thing ever since she doesn't like the rules of the convent and the Reverend Mother is very strict. However, everything changes once she meets the struggling choir at the convent. The nuns she meets at the convent turn out to be witty and relatable, which makes hanging out with them a delight. They help give her a bigger purpose in life and show her love and care that she didn't have before she moved to the convent. Sister Act is a happy show that brings together people from different places and ways of life through music.

Productions

The musical's first performance was on October 24, 2006, at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California. The last performance was on December 23, 2006. It broke records by making $1,085,929, the most money any show has ever made at that venue. Dawnn Lewis portrayed the original Deloris, but Patina Miller, who later played the character when the musical launched in London, was an ensemble member and an understudy.

Sister Act opened at the London Palladium in the West End on June 2, 2009, after previews started on May 7. Peter Schneider was in charge of the show, and Anthony Van Laast did the choreography. Klara Zieglerova did the set design, Lez Brotherston did the costumes, and Natasha Katz did the lighting. After looking for a year, 24-year-old actress Patina Miller was chosen to play Deloris.
