The grandeur of the Orpheum Theatre is symbolic because soon after it opened, its stage became a popular venue, resplendent with famous personalities like Sally Rand, the Marx Brothers, Will Rogers, Judy Garland, and comedian Jack Benny. Other jazz greats like Lena Home and Ella Fitzgerald have been known to be familiar faces in this grand theatre. In the 1960s, the theatre also hosted several rock-n-roll concerts featuring stars such as the budding Stevie Wonder, Little Richard, and Aretha Franklin.
Once the $3 million renovation project was completed in 1989, the theatre was once again ready to host events. Today, it is hands down one of the legendary movie palaces the city has to offer for tourists and local residents alike. The celebrated Orpheum Theatre has served as the home of the finest performing arts in the city for nearly 100 years. This former vaudeville house is a cornerstone of the rich heritage of Los Angeles, along with its cultural history. The renovations have restored its intricate splendor and enhanced acoustics while making it one of the grandest venues of all time. Each season, the theatre brings its audience a set of diverse performances and narratives. Parking is available in the OPPD Energy Plaza garage, and the Skylink connects to the balcony level of the theatre.
Located on Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles, the Orpheum Theatre opened its doors in 1926 as the fourth and final Los Angeles venue for the Orpheum vaudeville circuit. Its name comes from the Greek mythological figure, Orpheus. Designed by G. Albert Lansburgh—a renowned movie theatre architect—the Orpheum boasts a Beaux-Arts façade with a classic Wurlitzer organ. This organ is one of the last functional pipe organs in Southern California today.
