Demetri Martin
Demetri Martin is a stand-up comedian, writer, actor, director, and musician. He is best known for being a part of The Daily Show.
The comedian is known to deliver his jokes in a deadpan manner, a unique feature that has earned him fans worldwide. He also creates satirical cartoons and plays the guitar between his sets, thereby distinguishing him from others in this genre of entertainment.
Born on 25th May 1973 into a Greek-American family, Martin was raised in Toms River, New Jersey. In 1995, he graduated with a degree in History from Yale University, during which time he crafted a poem of 224 words that went on to become quite a famous palindrome poem.
Having secured a place at Harvard Law School, he chose to go to the New York University School of Law instead, as he had received a scholarship. Before he could finish his law degree, though, he dropped out to pursue a career in comedy.
Career and Accomplishments
During the summer of 1997 is when Martin started doing stand-up comedy. His major break came about in 2001 after he appeared on Premium Blend on Comedy Central. He was presented with the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2003 for his show, If I.
The show was then turned into a BBC television special in 2004. Martin was a writer for Late Night with Conan O'Brien between 2003 to 2004. Containing three parts, the comedian got his own special on Comedy Central Presents in 2004.
While the first part had him perform comedy in a traditional manner, the second one included visual aids in the form of funny drawings. The third and final bit was when he played the guitar in between his act.
While he played his music, his fellow comedians wore dramatic costumes to depict the magical land he was talking about. Some of Martin's family members were also present during this act, such as his mother and grandmother.
He created a comedy album, These Are Jokes, which came out in September 2006. The album also featured Will Forte and Leo Allen. 2009 witnessed him hosting and starring in his own TV show on Comedy Central titled Important Things with Demetri Martin.
In 2012, he came out with Demetri Martin: Stand-up Comedian, his second comedy album.
