Dreamgirls
Check out the Broadway musical by Bill Condon, Dream Girls. It is an American musical comedy and a crime drama. The story follows the evolution and history of American R&B music during the 1960s and 1970s. It is witnessed by the eyes of a girl group named Dreams and their record executive, who is manipulative. All of them are from Detroit, Michigan.
The Storyline
Dreamgirls forms the story of three black singers forming a group named Dreamettes. The singers include Lorrell, Deena, and Effie. They start as three talents and close friends. Gradually they sharpen their act by renaming themselves "The Dreams." However, they have little to no idea about show business's competitive world.
They enter a talent show held at the Apollo Theater in New York. In spite of their disappointment in not winning the event, they attract greater attention from sly-tongued talent Curtis Taylor. The girls get hired by the peers of Jr. Curtis for a backup act to a rising pop singing star, James Thunder Early.
They plan out a tour where they gain wide recognition. Curtis initially falls in love with Effie, the lead singer, who gives fuel to the act. However, later during an attempt to make the act sultry, he moves to Deena in the lead spot of Effie. But then, Curtis' love interest also switches to Deena. Hence, getting hurt and losing her singing gig, Effie explodes in rage. Thereafter, another black girl, Michelle, replaces Effie, and Dreams goes into attaining international stardom and occupies a spot on the chart-topping numbers.
Life proves to become rocky. Lorrell took up with James Early. In spite of this, he got married and did not leave his wife. The nightclub act started to lose stardom. Deena wanted to leave this group and try to get into movies. Effies started taking to the solo act.
Curtis tried to undermine her revitalized career by having the record of Dreams into her current hit song. However, Effie outmaneuvered him for both professional and personal triumph. Dreams got disbanded. But Effie joined them for the farewell.
Dreamgirls is a musical about the tough world of pop music, with the rise and fall of the stars taking a devastating toll. There is a greater musical score that appeals to older adolescents. The movie's primary message involves stardom which is never glamorous the way it appears to be.
