CIBC Theatre
CIBC Theatre is one of Chicago’s most iconic venues. Built in 1906, it has the ambience of a different era, decked out in the warm glow of lights, lines of red carpet, and lush architectural features. Currently seating 1,800 people, it is a more intimate, subdued experience than the typical stadium. If this sounds like the perfect venue for your trip out on the town, keep reading.
Over the years, CIBC has cycled through a few different names. It was originally opened as Majestic Theatre, but has also been called Private Bank Theatre, Bank of America Theatre, and Lasalle Bank Theatre. When the original architects Edmund Krause, George Rapp, and Cornelius Rapp dreamed up the place, they certainly had something majestic in mind. It was designed n the style of Beaux Arts. This Paris-derived style is characterized by formality, grandiosity, parallelism, and ornamentation. The original construction cost over one million dollars—a huge sum of money in the dawn of the 1900s. Over the years, CIBC has hosted a number of specialty acts, such as vaudeville, the Orpheum Circuit, and Harry Houdini. Although closed during the Great Depression from 1932 to 1945, CIBC reopened after it was bought by the Shubert Organization. The theatre has a wonderfully rich history in the city of Chicago, and has withheld the dynamic changes of the city for over a century.
Today, CIBC is a house of Broadway. In 2005 and 2006, the theatre underwent major renovations. Intentionally, the historic integrity has been maintained. These days, Hamilton is the showstopper at CIBC but if you're in New York, you can purchase Hamilton Broadway tickets. This new American classic penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda has gained a glowing reputation around the world for its singing and rapping that showcases Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Dear Evan Hansen is another popular pick for CIBC. It is the story of a high school boy with social anxiety disorder. As one of the top Broadway destinations in the Midwest, visitors can assume that regardless of what Broadway spectacular is being performed, the quality will be exceptional. Past productions include Jersey Boys, Kinky Boots, The Book of Mormon, Monty Python's Spamalot, and more.
