Mo Amer
Mohammad Mustafa Amer, popularly known as Mo Amer, is an American comedian of Palestinian descent. Amer rose to fame with the comedy special Mo Amer: The Vagabond, which can be streamed on Netflix. He was also a part of the trio Allah Made Me Funny. Besides, he also performed with Ramy Youssef in the sitcom Ramy on Hulu. In addition, he has also worked in films like Black Adam.
Amer also created the Netflix show Mo, where he stars as well. It is based on his own life experiences of growing up as a Palestinian refugee and what it is like to face certain stereotypes. The family had to flee Kuwait, and he grew up in Houston, Texas.
Rise as a Comedian and Performer
Amer discovered the arts at a very young age when his elder brother, who was a pilot, took him to a Bill Cosby show in the Houston Astrodome. He then saw a stand-up comedy act at a Texan rodeo when he was only 14 and was instantly drawn to it. He received help from a very supportive teacher who allowed him to do comedy in front of his class every Friday if he did not miss classes.
Once Amer graduated, he focused entirely on his acting and comedy career. He had started doing lead roles in school theater and used to impersonate his family members whenever he got the chance. He soon began performing in comedy clubs in and around Houston while continuing to work at a day job.
Later, Amer also participated in Houston's Funniest Person Contest and reached the finals. He also became a part of The Comedy Showcase. His mentor, Danny Martinez, taught him a lot about the technicalities of stand-up and gave him tips to hone his skills. Even before he turned twenty, he became the first and only Arab-American comedian to be flown out of the US to perform in front of US and coalition troops.
Over the years, Amer has performed in over 27 countries. Some of the places he has performed are The Comedy Festival in Las Vegas, Royal Albert Hall in London, the Islam Expo in Olympia, London, and Acer Arena in Sydney, among others. He has also appeared in talk shows, and radio shows on CNN, BBC, and NPR and has been interviewed by Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and The Guardian.
You must watch Mo Amer’s live performances, which are truly spectacular. They are among the best you will ever see, and you will soon return for more.
