The Basement - Columbus
Although Columbus, Ohio might not have the glitz, glamour, and name-recognition as other big cities in the United States such as Las Vegas and New York, it is the fourteenth most populous city in the United States and one of the fastest growing in the country. The Columbus metropolitan area has also been recognized by publications like Money Magazine, Forbes, and BusinessWeek for their wage growth, educated population, and cultural life. One of the venues that locals love to visit is The Basement, a live music venue, bar, dance and night club.
The Basement is in what’s known as Flytown, a neighborhood northwest of downtown Columbus. Historically, this was the Irish-American immigrant community’s stomping grounds, so it has a distinct local history. Many other entertainment venues are along what was formerly Naghten Street – now Nationwide Boulevard – nicknamed the “Irish Broadway.” The Basement is set between Huntington Park and LC Pavilion at 391 Neil Avenue Columbus, Ohio 42215.
Although the history of The Basement itself is relatively unknown, today locals go there for a good time listening to something relatively unknown. It has good acoustics, easy parking, and intimate feel. It draws in some unusual talent, too. One reviewer described it as “stellar for such a small place.” For people who do not want to get pushed to the back in large crowds or be so far away they cannot see the performers, The Basement is a great choice.
When it comes to the performance itinerary, The Basement is prided on having a genre-inclusive space. Upcoming and recent performers include Nashville pop group The Brook and The Bluff, dance/electronic/hip-hop/pop artists Christian French, upcoming cool boy Cal Scruby, California synth-rock band Hunny, Dublin post-punk artists The Murder Capital, and Minneapolis synth-pop experimenters Polica. Other friends of The Basement include The Districts & Glove, Desert Noises, Meg Donnelly, Tate McRae, Mk.gee, and Kens Lekman. For locals who want something that is not playing on the radio, something that gives an underground feel, something that is relatively undiscovered, they go here.
All shows are available for general admission. There is no assigned seating, if there is seating at all. This adds to the vibrant indie feel of the hall. A select number of ADA-approved seats are available at the time of ticket purchase. Most shows at this venue are not age restricted, but every guest must have a ticket to be permitted entry.
