Paula Poundstone
Paula Poundstone is a stand-up comedian, actor, and commentator. Born on 29th December 1959 in Huntsville, Alabama, her family migrated to Sudbury, Massachusetts, a month after she was born.
It was in 1979 that she started performing at open-mic nights and commenced her career in stand-up comedy. The late Robin Williams saw her performing in 1984 and pushed her to shift to Los Angeles. He noticed her while she did her act for an episode of Saturday Night Live.
Career and Achievements
Poundstone got her to break into Hollywood in 1984 with the movie, Gremloids. She continued her work in stand-up comedy and appeared on numerous talk shows. She got bestowed with the honor of the American Comedy Award for Best Female Stand-Up Comic in 1989.
Poundstone developed a comedy special in 1990 for HBO titled Cats, Cops, and Stuff, which led her to become the first woman to receive the CableACE Award for Best Stand-up Comedy Special.
TIME Magazine named it one of The 5 Funniest Stand-Up Specials Ever in March of 2019. Her second stand-up comedy special for HBO, titled Paula Poundstone Goes to Harvard, was taped at Sanders Theatre.
She was a part of the 1992 US Presidential campaign, where she worked for The Tonight Show, and also did a couple of pieces in 1996 for The Rosie O'Donnell Show.
Poundstone won the CableACE Award for the second time in the category of Best Program Interviewer for her series, The Paula Poundstone Show, on HBO. She appeared on the game show Hollywood Squares and made a regular appearance on To Tell the Truth, the TV panel show.
As a voice actress, she gave the voice for Judge Stone on Science Court. She was also the voice for the character named Paula Small in Home Movies, a cartoon series, where she was present for the first five episodes.
Poundstone goes on tours pretty often across the United States of America, performing at art centers and theaters. She is revered for never repeating her acts often, and the audience members absolutely love interacting with her.
Her first book, There Is Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say, came out in 2006 and was published by the Crown Publishing Group. Her second book, The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness, was released in May 2017.
