The Cher Show
The jukebox musical The Cher Show, with a book by Rick Elice, relies heavily on the singer's music and portrays the tale of Cher's life and career.
Three different actresses play Cher. One plays her in the 1950s and 1960s and is called "Babe." Another plays her in the 1970s and is called "Lady," and the third plays her in the 1980s and 1990s (nicknamed "Star"). At different times, the three talk to each other and help each other.
The musical's world premiere was on June 12, 2018, at the Oriental Theater in Chicago. It opened on Broadway in December 2018. The Original Cast Album came out on digital platforms on April 12, 2019, and on CD on May 10, 2019. On August 18, 2019, The Cher Show had its last show on Broadway. A new version of the show opened in April 2022 at the Leicester Curve before going on a tour of the UK.
The Story
Musical biography depicts not so much a rags-to-riches story as a rollercoaster ride from poverty to wealth and back again. It mirrors the ups and downs of her marriages and personal relationships.
Cher's spectacular rise to fame is chronicled here by three actresses. Onstage, time flies by in sync with Cher's greatest hits, allowing fans to follow along with the fast-paced chronology of her life. With wigs, increasingly daring outfits, and the sounds of her greatest hits, it is a brilliant, glittering, and extravagant event.
Production
The show's out-of-town tryout began on June 28 and ran until July 14, 2018. The last performance had technical problems, so the show had to end one day early, on July 14, 2018. After a run in Chicago, the musical started previews on Broadway on November 1, 2018, and had its official opening at the Neil Simon Theatre on December 3, 2018.
Rick Elice penned the musical's book. Jason Moore directed it, and Christopher Gattelli did the choreography. Daryl Waters did the orchestrations, arrangements, and musical supervision, and Steve Orich did some more orchestrations. Bob Mackie is the costume designer. Christine Jones and Brett J. Banakis are in charge of the set, Kevin Adams takes care of the lighting, and Nevin Steinberg controls the sound. The COVID-19 pandemic pushed back the original launch date of October 2020 in Rochester, New York.
