The “Atlanta Falcons” is a professional football team situated in Atlanta, Georgia. The team is part of the South Division, which plays in the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). The team plays their home games at the Georgia Dome located in the downtown suburb of Atlanta. In May of 2014, a new edifice on the New Atlanta Stadium for the 2017 game season.
The team was formed in the year 1965 as one of the league’s expansion teams, at the time, the Falcons were under the ownership of Rankin Smith. The Falcons have achieved much in their 48 years of existence in the National Football League (NFL). In fact, they have assembled a winning record of 316-414-6 with division championships in the years 1980, 1998, 2004, 2010 and 2012. The team also made their way to the Miami’s Super Bowl XXXIII in the year 1998.
History of Franchise
In the year 1965, the urge to pursue a professional football career in Atlanta came after the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was formed. The franchise became official on June 30, 1965 after the NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle awarded the ownership to Rankin Smith.
Rankin Smith is an executive vice president of Life Insurance Company situated in Georgia. Smith paid a total of $8.5 million for the franchise, it was the highest price in the NHL’s history during the year 1965.
The team’s expansion that was granted to the Atlanta Falcons have brought fame in the city of Atlanta. The Falcons also ranked as the 15th league’s franchise in the NFL and in the 1996 NFL draft, the team was given the first pick and the final pick in every first five rounds of the game.
On August 29, 1965, the team got its nickname as the “Falcons” when a school teacher from Griffin named Julia Elliott suggested it as the team’s nickname. She described the “Falcons” as proud, dignified, courageous, fighter and is a good sport.
