Jay Leno
Jay Leno is widely recognized as the host of The Tonight Show on NBC from 1992 to 2009 and from 2010 to 2014. Despite being born in New Rochelle, Leno spent much of his childhood in Andover, Massachusetts. He opted for stand-up comedy in the 1970s and quickly became very popular with his scintillating and pleasant nature.
Early Life
On April 28th, 1950, Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York. His mother, Catherine Muir, emigrated to the United States from Greenock, Scotland when she was 11 years old. Angelo (1910-1994), his father, was an insurance agent and the son of Italian immigrants from Flumeri. Leno went to high school in Andover, Massachusetts. He went to Emerson College and earned a speech therapy bachelor's degree. In 1973, he started a comedy club there. Patrick, his older brother, was a soldier in the Vietnam War and a lawyer who died on October 6th, 2002.
Career
Leno has spent most of his career garnering attention for his commentary on current events and interviews with notable figures in the public eye. He has also been on several good causes, such as Jay Leno's Garage, a website and YouTube channel about cars and car culture. Leno has made numerous appearances on various talk shows, including those hosted by Howard Stern on the radio and Conan O'Brien late at night.
In 2009, Leno quit his job as host of The Tonight Show. Conan O'Brien moved into the job. However, in 2010, NBC opted to reinstate Leno on The Tonight Show, and O'Brien left the network. Leno was in charge of the show until 2014. After that, Jimmy Fallon took over.
When Leno left "The Tonight Show," he still did stand-up and made TV appearances. Jay Leno has a second reality show, Jay Leno's Garage, on CNBC about his love of vehicles. He has penned multiple books, including the autobiography Leading with My Chin.
Leno has won several awards, including a People's Choice Award, an Emmy, and a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. He is now enshrined in the Television Hall of Fame as well.
